SERIOUS GOODS IN THE 6th arrondissement
Have I gone to interiors heaven?
I travelled everywhere on foot in Paris, with the exception of one afternoon I went too far to return and my ankles desperately found their way to the metro.
This particular afternoon was a short walk across the Seine from the 2nd arrondissement to the 6th where I explored the showrooms of beautiful furniture, antiques and lighting. These pretty windows and doors off the streets were more like mini museums, with an eclectic mix inside each.
‘Fremontier Antiquaires’ caught my attention for its marble sculptures and urns, along with ‘Galerie Le Febvre’ which showcased elegantly modern furniture and decor with a nod to mid century. L’Atelier 55 had curated incredible lighting along with Galerie Canavèse who at this point was stealing the show in terms of mid century modern and art deco decoration. Chrome and white leather continues to catch my eye. I see the most fabulous chairs collected by a courier, heading to a very lucky customer. I start to feel simultaneously everwhelmed and at home surrounded by so many objects staring at me all at once. I carefully walk towards the back of the store, attempting to encode what I see… which would be almost impossible. Catherine Canavèse herself greets me and shares more information on some of her beautiful pieces. I speak broken french, she replies in english, I think thats the way it goes… Her business card is simple yet bold. I take a seat and never want to leave.
I continued to pass Galerie Stanislas (truly mid-century) and Galerie Saint Martin which was full to the brim of antique oil paintings to finally reach the famous De Gournay. I enthusiastically pressed the doorbell and happily waited to enter this incredible space. Oh and what did it look like in there? See the next page of Edward’s Notebook…
